In the internet marketing community there two types of people. Those who apply the knowledge given to them (the doers), and those who make up excuses. Similarly, there’s going to be two types of people who visit this page. Beginners who lack the knowledge needed to move forward, and those who know what to do but never apply it. Chances are if you already have a gang of traffic, you wont ever see this page. You don’t need to.
This is my top 10 list of web traffic tips, sadly often overlooked by many internet marketers.
Yahoo! Answers is still a great source for web traffic. Don’t ask me why, but there is still a large portion of internet users who use YA before even thinking of asking Google. It’s still extremely easy to capitalize on this right now, and assuming you don’t spam (only answer relevant questions), your traffic will be laser targeted which will also help with conversion rates. Despite Yahoo’s dwindling success as a search engine, it still dominates the Question & Answers niche, it would be foolish to ignore this 100 lb gorilla!
Another great traffic booster often over looked is forum posting. There’s literally a forum for pretty much every niche you could possibly think of. Just type your niche into Google followed by the word “forum” and you’re almost guaranteed to see dozens of communities with like-minded members. Once again, this is laser targeted traffic. Almost every forum allows you to put a link in your signature. The more active and helpful your are to the community, the better your chances are getting them to your webpage.
With over 190 million visitors every month, even a small slice of the pie could be HUGE for a small or growing business. Creative headlines and relevant hash tags are key here. Make your headlines interesting and compelling, and include hash tags so users using the search feature can easily find your tweet. Getting traffic from Twitter is still alive and well!
Similarly to Twitter, Facebook is still a powerhouse for generating traffic to your website. Ranked as the second most visited website in the world, you are really handicapping yourself by NOT using Facebook. Creating a fan page literally takes seconds to do, and you also run the chance of going viral, which could bring in more traffic then you could ever imagine. (Pro Tip: Make sure you create a fan page rather than a group, groups for some reason do not show up in news feeds. Create a fan page instead to get more exposure!)
Getting your content in front of the people looking for it is the goal here, social bookmarking will do just that. Assuming your content is fresh, and relevant, it may even go viral. Social bookmarking services allow users to publically bookmark their favorite websites where others can give it an up or down vote. The 3 most popular of these services would be Digg, Reddit, and Delicious. All of which get over 8 MILLION unique visitors a month! Bookmarking useful content that people will enjoy is a sure fire way to get up votes, and it only takes like 3 seconds to do.
Commenting on blogs, especially high ranking authoritative ones related to your niche is still a wonderful way to get good traffic to your site. The key here is to be one of the first people to comment, and make it insightful (no spamming) so that users will actually want to funnel to your webpage. The higher up your are on the commenting list, the more traffic. Google Reader has now been discontinued, but there are many other alternatives that you can use to alert you when new blog posts are made.
Guest blogging is when two blog owners write content for each other, in exchange for a link back to their original site. What kind of webmaster doesn’t love free content, or free traffic? It’s a win-win for both parties. If you need help finding other blog owners to guest post for, check out www.myblogguest.com – a community of blog owners waiting for guest posters just like you. Make sure the content you write is quality work, as this is your reputation on the line. When putting forth a first impression to a new group of readers you want to be %100 on your A game.
Article Marketing is not a new concept, but it’s still a lively form of traffic generation. The idea is to write content for popular article directories like Ezine Articles, Article Base, and Article Dashboard. These services allow website owners to post this content to their own websites. If you write helpful and interesting content, your article could appear on hundreds of websites, which means more traffic for you!
This actually requires a little bit of creativity and thinking “outside of the box”, but the payoff could be tremendous. This is when a webmaster creates content so extremely useful or entertaining that visitors are compelled to link to it and share it with their friends. This can be done by making helpful and entertaining infographics, a checklist or “cheat sheet” to a problem, a funny video or meme, or even just a well written and unique article. Once you start finding valuable solutions to real problems and “fill in the gaps”, you’ll suddenly find that getting traffic is not nearly as difficult as most marketers seem to make it.
